In the 1920's, Lions worked with the Pottsville Hospital to provide one of the first ambulances to serve in the area. Local funeral directors provided ambulance services through the 1930's and 40's. In 1947, the Schuylkill Haven Lions began ambulance operations with Pottsville Lions starting in 1954. They each held community fund drives to purchase ambulances and hire attendants to assist volunteers in providing ambulance services to their communities. Recognizing the need for specialization in the field of medical transportation, the Schuylkill Haven and Pottsville Lions Clubs merged their operations in September 2001. The Orwigsburg Ambulance was founded in 1948 by the VFW and merged their operation in 2014 to improve services provided to all areas.
